Erin Riordan: Cosmetic Ingredients Explained
D & C Red 27:
D&C Red 27 is a synthetic dye produced from petroleum or coal-tar sources; this dye is FDA-approved for use in pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. It is just one of the many widely used FD&C and D&C colors that are part of a group called lake dyes. They are coal tar (bituminous coal) derivatives that are continuously tested on animals due to their carcinogenic properties.
Facts:
There are moderate concerns about developmental/reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity and organ system toxicity. It is also labeled as a persistent and a bio-accumulative ingredient. This means, the more exposure you have to this ingredient, the more it accumulates in your system. It has also been linked to ADD, ADHD, autism, rashes, asthma and cancerous tumors.
Sweet Lily Organic Salon and Spa does not use or sell any products that contain artificial dyes of any kind. We use Organic Italy Hair color, USPA Organic Hair care and Skin care Systems, and Emani Organic Mineral Makeup. All of these companies strive to produce safe, eco-conscious, and responsible personal care products.
Erin Riordan: Cosmetic Ingredients Explained
Paraben: A class of chemicals used in cosmetic products as a preservative.
Methylparaben:
Methylparaben is linked to cancer, allergies, immuno-toxicity and is restricted in US, Japan, most European countries and Canada. There are strong concerns over organ system toxicity, moderate concerns for skin, eyes or lung irritation and biochemical or cellular level changes. There are also emerging concerns over neurotoxicity and endocrine disruption.
Proplyparaben:
Exposure to Proplyparaben can cause cancer, developmental / reproductive toxicity, allergies and immuno-toxicity. There are moderate concerns about endocrine disruption and organ system toxicity, and there are emerging concerns about eco-toxicology.
Facts:
A recent study posted in the Journal of Applied Toxicology recently said: A group of researchers studied 160 breast-tissue samples, obtained from 40 patients who had undergone a mastectomy for primary breast cancer. They found that 99% of samples had traces of at least 1 paraben, and that 60% had traces of 5 different parabens.
Once breast cells were exposed to methylparaben, they started behaving like cancer cells. Tamoxifen, a drug designed to prevent or treat cancer, slows down the growth of both healthy and cancerous breast cells and ultimately leads to their death. However, when tamoxifen was introduced in the lab, the cells exposed to methylparaben kept growing and didn’t die. Methylparaben not only mimics estrogen’s ability to drive cancer, but appears to be even better than the natural hormone in bypassing the ability of drugs to treat it.
Sweet Lily Organic Salon and Spa does not carry, use or distribute any products that contain parabens of any kind. Our organic personal care products will not harm you or our environment.

Erin Riordan: Cosmetic Ingredient’s Explained
Fragrance:
Most fragrance is derived from petrochemicals. Artificial fragrances contain solvents, aldehydes and benzene derivatives and other toxins which have been linked to birth defects and cancer.
No agency regulates the fragrance industry. Methylene chloride, a known carcinogen that also causes autoimmune disease, is listed as one of the 20 most common chemicals found in fragrance products in the 1991 EPA study.
Even though the FDA banned the chemical in all cosmetic and fragrance products in 1989. John Bailey, FDA, states there is no way to police the fragrance industry since it is unregulated and exempt from listing ingredients.
A study run by the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics found that the 17 products tested contained, on average, 14 chemicals not listed on labels due to a loophole in federal law that allows companies to claim fragrances as trade secrets. These chemicals can trigger allergic reactions or disrupt hormones. Hormone-disrupting chemicals are linked to a range of health effects including sperm damage, thyroid disruption and cancer.
At Sweet Lily Organic Salon and Spa, we only carry products that are Organic and free from artificial fragrances, perfumes, or dyes. You will find no chemical presence within our salon environment that could bring the body any harm.
